Shearsby Valley Lakes, LE17 6PX

Sunset Lake, Peg 11  Tuesday 30th June 2020 10.00-14.00

My second visit to Shearsby this season. Weather was fine with just a bit of light drizzle for a few minutes at one point.

Bait was Maggots, Casters and Worm. The Maggots and Casters were purchased from the on-site shop prior to fishing but the worm had been kept from my previous visit..

The purpose today was to try fishing with my Daiwa Harrier 6m Whip which has been elasticated with NG Amber Core Hollow - White 6-10 through the top two sections (the number 1 section has been removed).  It's not really traditional whip fishing as I did not use the flick tip.

I again fished two lines:
Main Line: Telescopic top plus 2 sections.
Second Line: Left margin (same whip set up)

Initial Feed
Fed Margin with soaked 1mm micros (half cup)
Fed main line with Chopped Worm/Caster/Hemp mix

Starting on the main line it was 'a fish a cast' at the start but they were only small roach. After half an hour things began to slow up with only the odd Ide as well as the roach and small perch.

I decided to take a break for lunch as the Cafe was open for takeaway food and drink, so I treated myself to a bacon bap and a coffee.

After lunch I decided to try the left hand margin, again setting the float 1" overdepth.
There were no bream/skimmers today but I did catch a nice carp along with the usual roach and ide.

I like to take my time when pleasure fishing so I really only fished for 2-3 hours. All in all the fishing was a bit slower today but it was still another very enjoyable day so I will be back again in the not too distant future, perhaps to try one of the carp lakes.

Sunset Lake, Peg 11  Tuesday 9th June 2020 10.00-16.00

My first visit to Shearsby for over 8 years and there are now new owners and many changes, all for the good from my experience. Unfortunately, due to Covid-19 restrictions the Cafe was not open but the fishery were ensuring plenty of spacing by only allowing restricted numbers on each lake, leaving at least one vacant peg between those fishing.

Bait (and a few other bits and pieces) were purchased from the on-site shop prior to fishing.

This was always going to be a leisurely day out to get back into the way of using a pole, not something I do very often.

Fished two lines:
Main Line: Top Kit + 4 straight out (later a shorter line using just Top Kit + 2)
Second Line: Left margin (Margin Pole)

Initial Feed
Fed Margin with soaked 1mm micros (half cup)
Fed main line with Chopped Worm/Caster/Hemp mix

Started on Main Line, over depth by 2ins.
Float: NG XT Cane Tip Finesse Carbon
Hook Bait: Worm
Hook: Drennan Red Maggot, Size 18
Feeding Red Maggots/Caster/Worm Mix via a pole pot after each fish.
Several fish from start but lost a few when unshipping so decided to omit 2 sections.
Equally good on the shorter line, catching Roach & Perch, Ide, Skimmers and Carp, nothing special but a lot of them.

Although the short line was still working decided to try the left hand margin, again setting the float 1" overdepth.
Pole: 5.6m Margin Pole.
Float: NG XT Margin
Hook: Drennan Carp Pellet, Size 16
Again, fed with 1mm Soaked pellets via smallest pole cup. Fished with 6mm expander on the hook.
Some better fish caught, including some nice bream.

Finished with a few casts (and fish) back on the 2+2 line

A very enjoyable day so I will be back again in the not too distant future.
